Mr Brett Carter

Clinical Psychologist

M. Clin Psych, B. Psych Sci (Hons)

Brett has a unique background of personal, professional, and academic experience that has informed his “square pegs for square holes” approach to working with clients. Brett believes that helping clients with problems should be an individualised process tailored to their history, values, and preferences rather than clients having to fit into a mould. Brett’s practice is guided by modern neuroscience, evidence-based psychological treatments, and philosophy. His aim is to form a collaborative, genuine, open, and feedback driven relationship with clients. Brett has a special interest in working in performance and sport psychology.

I perceive it to be a huge mistake to assume to understand anything about someone based upon a label.

Get to know Brett

Brett took a less conventional path to becoming a psychologist, commencing studies in his early thirties after travelling and working extensively overseas, enlisting and discharging from the military, and racing as a professional triathlete. Seeing first-hand how differently athletes responded to and coped with the demands of training and racing was the impetus to him studying psychology. Whilst completing his six years of studies Brett was coaching elite swimmers and multisport athletes at Bond University and involved in numerous physiological and psychological research projects. In his spare time Brett loves running with his dog, watching sport, beer tasting at pubs with his wife, and studying neuroscience, consciousness, and peak performance.

Brett has worked in both government and private settings to assist individuals with concerns such as addictive behaviors, stress, disordered eating, depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, and persistent/chronic pain. Brett worked in the Queensland Spinal Cord Injury Unit to help patients adjust to life after traumatic injury and with ADF members and first responders to help them overcome post-traumatic stress, injury setbacks, involuntary/medical discharge, and adjustment to life after service. Brett has worked with athletes in numerous sports (including swimming, athletics, gymnastics, dance, football, triathlon, and rowing), executives, and medical professionals with issues that are inhibiting attainment of peak performance.

Brett has completed further training in the assessment and treatment of PTSD, moral injury, and eating disorders. Brett is a provider for the AFL and AIS Mental Health Referral Networks. He uses techniques from a range of evidence-based therapies that include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Schema Therapy, and Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy. Brett has endorsement in clinical psychology and is a board approved supervisor.
