Manage your mood swings
Bipolar Disorder or Manic Depression the name given to the experience of abnormal mood swings. It is characterised by the experience of extremely “high” moods (aka. “mania”) of euphoria or elation, and the experience of extremely “low” moods (aka “depression”) for sadness and loss of pleasure. These mood episodes can have different patterns from person to person, can range from mild to severe, don’t necessarily make sense in the context of what is going on in someone’s life and can be very disruptive and make it difficult to function in day-to-day life.
Bipolar patients have commonly reported increased activity, decreased need for sleep, and elevated mood as early warning signs of mania, and depressed mood, loss of energy, loss of interest in people or activities, impaired concentration, and thoughts of death as early warning signs for depression.
Other signs of mania include:
high self-esteem
increased energy
a reduced need for sleep
an increase in goal-directed behaviour (e.g. staying up all night to get something done)
racing thoughts
irritability
agitation, frustration or anger
increased sexual activity
reckless or dangerous behaviour
excessive spending.
